A disc type variation for record-able Blu-ray discs (aka BD-R) was rolled out in Update 282 on April 16, 2018. With Catalog Update 282, 1,031 titles are now classified as type Blu-ray R. The DVDR Web based service was updated so that this disc type variation is added to applicable pages.
The Manufacture-On-Demand (MOD) publishers use the CD-R and BD-R formats so that they don't need to keep any inventory of titles. After a customer orders the title, the item is recorded, printed, and assembled. MOD titles often have fewer special features and more informal cover art that mass market titles. The MOD process permits publishers to make the back-catalog available on a disc format that would otherwise only be economical in a streaming format.
