Two New Catalog Update Reports for Silent and Pre-Code Movies

With Update 282, two new catalog update reports rolled out for Silent Movies and Pre-Code Movies.

The silent film era ended approximately in 1929 with the introduction of synchronized sound. Films from the silent era used subtitles and were often accompanied by live piano. The new Silent Movie Report includes movies that are designated as "silent" in the language designation that have never previously been issued in a disc format.

The Pre-Code era is typically considered to be the theatrical release period between 1929 and 1934.  This is the "wild west" period of the movie industry when movie theatrical exhibition became common place but the industry lacked any regulation on the thematic content of the stories and themes. Competition for audience caused film makers to produce what would be known today as material for mature audiences. There was a backlash against the content of these films on the premise that they had a deleterious effect on public morality. The Motion Picture Production Code (aka Hayes Code) was adopted by the film industry to avoid federal regulation of film content. Movies complaint with the Hayes Code are designated as "Approved". There is no concept of age appropriate content in the Hayes Code. The Hayes Code as replaced in the 1960's with the MPAA code.

The new Pre-Code Movie report includes movies released between 1929 and 1934 that have not been previously issued in a disc format.  1934 was a transitional year and included theatrical release of both Pre-Code and Approved movies. Pre-Code movies are prized by collectors because the themes and content are risqué, complex, and entertaining by comparison to the thematic straight jacket of the Hayes Code.
