Windows 11 Compatibility

In October 2025, Microsoft ended support for Windows 10. The change in status caused some DVD Register Desktop users to purchase new PCs compatible with Windows 11 and needed to migrate their DVD Register catalog from the old PC to the new PC running Windows 11. This process triggered some compatibility issues that needed to be resolved.  The good news is that the DVD Register application can be installed on Windows 11 version 25H2 with some workarounds.

See the issues described on more detail below.

Tom Orlofsky

Windows S Mode: Some new PCs running Windows Home Version can be configured in "Security Mode" or "S Mode" at the factory. S-Mode is possible both in Windows 10 and Windows 11. S-Mode locks down Windows so that the user can only install new programs that are available on the Microsoft Store. The DVD Register installer is not available on the Microsoft Store, so it cannot be installed on a Windows PC that is configured in S-Mode. The first work around is to not buy a new PC that is configured for S-Mode to avoid the issue entirely. The next work around is to run a program that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store that re-configures Windows into the traditional mode.  This process cannot be reversed. Likewise a PC that ships in traditional mode cannot be switched into S-Mode later. More here from Microsoft: Switching out of S mode in Windows

Windows Defender Smart Screen: In Spring 2025, Microsoft added a new security process in Windows 11 known as Windows Defender Smart Screen. Windows Defender Smart Screen prevents an unrecognized app from running. "Unrecognized" means a program that does not have a cryptographic digital signature granted by Microsoft. The DVD Register Desktop application does not have a digital signature so Windows Defender Smart Screen prevents the installer from running. There is a work around to allow an unsigned program to be installed. See the DVD Register Help topic that explains how to perform the workaround and start the installer.  Help Desk: Windows Defender is blocking the DVD Register installer. How do I work around this issue? Note that the DVD Register was built using the Windows Office Development Environment and runs as a Microsoft Access application. MS Access has a digital signature. Installing and running Access is not blocked by Windows Defender Smart Screen.

Strict ActiveX Security Settings in Office 365: In Spring 2024 Microsoft made a change in the Office 365 Installer that defaults to strict security settings that control the behavior of ActiveX controls. ActiveX controls are runtime dynamic linked programs that were supplied by Microsoft when the DVD Register Desktop was developed in the 1990s for use by MS office Application Developers. The DVD Register desktop application will not operate in this strict default configuration. The failure can be manifest by the Error 2926: when opening the Tools>Live Update...Command. This process uses an ActiveX control to access the Internet. The failure can also be manifest by Error #438 when using the File:Export Backup. Command, This process uses and ActiveX control to write to the file system. There are potentially other commands that will fail. See the DVD Register Help topic that explains how to allow ActiveX control to work as needed for the DVD Register:   Help Desk: How do I correct the ActiveX Security Settings in Windows 11?. Note that the Windows Access Runtime Installer for Access 2016 and Access 2019 do not invoke the strict ActiveX security settings. Also be aware that in order to use the DVD Register with Office 365, you must install the 32-bit version of Office 365.  The DVD Register is not compatible with the 64-bit version that is the default version that would be installed.
