QR Codes to Replace UPC Codes on Retail Packaging Starting in 2027

QR Codes on Retail Packaging: The 2-Dimensional bar code known as a Quick-Response Code is planned to replace the traditional 1-Dimensional barcode on retail packages. QR codes printed on retail packages may begin in 2027. Initially, for backward compatibility, both the QR code and the 1-D bar code will appear on the package. The full adoption and migration to QR codes only, will probably take many years. Eventually the 1-D bar code will disappear. A QR code is basically a URL. The good news is that the emerging QR code standards for retail known as "GS1" requires that the UPC or EAN code be incorporated into the QR Code. The bad news is that the UPC or EAN isn't required to be printed in human readable text on the package. The UPC code has always been an important aspect of the DVD Register. The UPC can be used to identify a specific retail package universally across publishers. A UPC scanner is a very useful method to automate the build-up of a personal catalog. Older bar code scanners cannot read QR codes. Economical hand held USB QR code scanners are available. The DVD Register software will need to be updated so that a scan of a QR code can initiate a database search in the same manner as occurs with a scan of a UPC or an EAN. We will need to see how the publishers of physical media adopt the QR Code "GS1" standard on their packaging. It is likely that the adoption will be driven by Amazon, WalMart and other retailers. A good back grounder on the transition in retail to QR codes can be found here: QR Code Sunrise 2027
