The DVD Register catalog item is oriented to the retail package. Traditionally a retail item contained one or more discs of the same type. In the DVD Register, the media count attribute indicated the number of discs in the package. With the advent of Blu-ray it has become common for publishers to issue combo-packs consisting of both a BD and DVD. It is also common to see a BD-3D disc combined with a a BD-2D disc. There are other combo variations such as a DVD and CD. It is also possible to find combo season packs that combine more than one BD and DVD.
Introduced in February 2014, the DVDR2 catalog now can catalog and count sub-package disc counts by type of disc. At the current time the Reference Catalog does not provide sub-package counts. When a title is copied from the Reference Catalog, the sub-package could will be populated with the media count of the dominant package type of the item.
