As of Catalog Update 223, the DVDR2.0 service now includes 54,416 Jumbo front cover images, I define Jumbo cover images for DVDs as those images that are bigger than 750 pixels wide. Normal sized images are 500 pixels wide or smaller. One a screen with 96 dpi resolution a 500 pixel DVD image is about life size. New Jumbo images are automatically linked to your personal catalog.
One use for the Jumbo Images is an electronic home theater poster. By clicking on a jumbo image it will be displayed by itself in a browser window. The browser window can then be expanded to fill the entire screen on a monitor or television connected to a PC. Some users have suggested putting such a monitor at the entrance to their home theater.
Some web sites provide a virtual magnifying glass where by hovering over a normal sized image, a patch of the image is magnified. I personally find this useful in some e-commerce situations but not for the front cover of a DVD. It also slows performance since the larger image needs to be downloaded to the browser whether the magnifier is used or not.
Another possibility yet to be built is a Jumbo image gallery linked to the catalog audit page. This would permit one to determine how many factory jumbo images are linked in a given catalog.
Let me know if you have any other ideas on how to gain greater utility from the jumbo images.
